The Resume

    (February 16, 1946-February 2, 2024)
Born in Birmingham, England, United Kingdom
Birth name was Arthur Ian Lavender
Portrayed Private Frank Pike in 'Dad's Army' (1968-77) and Derek Harkinson in EastEnders (2001-05, 2016-17)
Appeared in the films 'Confessions of a Pop Performer' (1975), 'Carry On Behind' (1975), 'Adventures of a Taxi Driver' (1976), Adventures of a Private Eye' (1977), and 'The Hooligan Factory' (2014)

Why he might be annoying:

He and Arthur Lowe appeared as their 'Dad's Army' characters in ads for Barclays Bank.
He said that being typecast as Pike kept him from being cast in 'two very big movies' in the 1970s.
Most of the film roles he did get were supporting parts in the genre that TV Tropes dubbed 'the Awful British Sex Comedy.'
He frequently complains that TV no longer shows programs the whole family can watch.

Why he might not be annoying:

When asked to pick a scarf for Pike to wear, he chose one in the colors of his favorite football club, Aston Villa.
'Dad's Army' co-star John Laurie was godfather to his two sons.
When he was a guest on 'Celebrity Mastermind' and host John Humphrys asked for his name, fellow contestant Rick Wakeman shouted, 'Don't tell him, Pike!' (A famous 'Dad's Army' punchline, shouted by Captain Mainwaring after a captured German U-Boat officer asked for the Private's name.)
A variety of lavender was named after him.
He said about 'Dad's Army,' 'I am glad to be remembered for it. I have never understood why actors say, 'It's not the only thing I've done.''
