    His ex-fiance, Christina Sharp, claimed he used the intimate details of their love life in his book 'Cat and Mouse.'
    Stephen King called him a 'terrible writer' and his books 'dopey thrillers.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He beat out J.K. Rowling as the author whose books were most borrowed from British libraries (2007).
    He established the James Patterson Page Turner Awards and ReadKiddoRead.com to 'spread the excitement of books and reading.'
    His success in marketing himself was chosen as a case study by the Harvard Business School.
    He said, 'The thing about my books is that they're a rollercoaster ride, but at the end you get relief. It all gets sorted out.'
