The Resume

    (April 21, 1912-January 4, 2012)
    Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
    Birth name was Eve Cohen
    Fashion and portrait photographer
Photographed Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich and Joan Crawford
Books include 'The Unretouched Woman' (1976), 'Flashback: The 50s' (1978), ‘Horse Training for the Militia in Inner Mongolia’ (1979), 'In China' (1980), 'The Making of the White Nights' (1985), 'All in a Day's Work' (1989), 'In Retrospect' (1995), 'Handbook' (2005) and 'Eve Arnold's People' (2010)

Why she might be annoying:

Marlene Dietrich called her ‘My white girl,’ because of her prematurely gray hair.
She had to get her parents to begrudgingly accept her decision to abandon medicine for a career in photography.
She did two photo sessions with Joan Crawford - the first showing her intense beauty regiment and the second following Joan and her daughter Christina around New York (boy, if only to be a fly on the wall on that shoot!).

Why she might not be annoying:

She was one of nine children.
She was the first woman to join the Magnum Photo agency in 1957.
She photographed future First Ladies Jackie, Lady Bird and Nixon for a 1960 Life Magazine story on Presidential candidate’s wives.
She succeeded in capturing starlets and female public figures in revealingly ordinary ways, free from the usual touched-up cheesecake of male photographers.
She photographed Marilyn over a decade until the filming of ‘The Misfits’ in 1961 (ironically, she was the only one to do so who didn’t also claim to be the only one she loved and trusted).
She took an interest in documenting the Civil Rights and Black Power movements of the 1960’s and an iconic 1961 shot of Malcolm X is credited to her.
