    Birth name was Hans Arp
    Founding member of the ‘Dada’ artistic movement
    Works include ‘Torse de Pyrénées,’ ‘Enak’s Tears,’ ‘Constellations’ and ‘Aquatique’

    He was an artist who ‘opposed art and everything it stood for.’
    He said that art should have no meaning or purpose whatsoever.
    Many feel his work is nonsense.
    He called art ‘a magic opening of the bowels.’

    He used his surreal ‘Dada’ movement to reflect the disorder in Europe following World War I.

    His work had a great influence on contemporary artists.

    The French government made him change his name from Hans to ‘Jean.’
