Radio Personality

The Resume

    (May 10, 1930-September 28, 2004)
    Born in Wichita, Kansas
Birth name was Donald Allen Munoz
Disc jockey in New York City for five decades
    Worked at WMCA-AM, WABC-AM, WOR-FM, WNEW-FM and WAXQ-FM
Hosted the syndicated radio programs 'Ticket to Ride' and 'Scott Muni's World of Rock'
Introduces the band on the album 'Chicago Live at Carnegie Hall' (1971)

Why he might be annoying:

He hosted a short-lived local New York TV show.
He released a spoken word record, 'Letter to an Unborn Child,' that flopped.
He and WNEW's music director Tom Troy, who was black, would play practical jokes by staging fights in front of new employees during which they would shout racial epithets at each other.
He did the 'How do you spell relief?' voiceover for Rolaids commercials.
His distinctive, gravelly voice was often parodied.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was nicknamed 'the Professor' for his wide-ranging musical knowledge.
He was interviewing Jimmy Page when the guitarist passed out from the effects of several days of partying. He calmly put on a record, roused Page while it was playing, and finished the interview with the musician lying on the studio floor.
He helped defuse the situation when a bank robber holding hostages called the station and demanded to speak to Muni and hear some Grateful Dead (1975).
He became close friends with John Lennon when his daughter Melissa and John's son Sean were born on the same day in the same hospital.
After Lennon's murder, he would began each show with either a Beatles song or a solo record by John.
Asked late in life if there was anything he wished he had done, he replied 'I did it all. Some I did more than once.'
