    Wrote the novels 'King Rat,' 'Tai-Pan,' 'Shogun,' 'A Children's Story,' 'Noble House,' 'Thrump-O-Moto,' 'Whirlwind' and 'Gai-Jin'
    Wrote the screenplays 'The Fly (1958)' and' 'Watusi (1959)'
    Co-wrote the screenplays 'The Great Escape (1963)' and 'The Satan Bug (1965)'
    Wrote and directed the movies 'Walk Like a Dragon (1960),' 'To Sir, with Love (1967),' 'The Sweet and the Bitter (1967)' and 'The Last Valley (1970)'
    Naturalized citizen of the United States (1963)
    Died of a cancer-complicated stroke at age 69

Why he might be annoying:

    He had a droopy right eye.
    A motorcycle accident ended his military career.
    He had an affair with Marlon Brando's assistant that produced a daughter (whom Brando adopted).
    Some historians dismissed the historical accuracy of his Asian novels.
    He stated, 'I'm not a novelist, but a storyteller. I'm not a literary figure at all.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    Wounded by machine gun fire in World War II, he was sent to Changi Prison near Singapore, where over 90% of prisoners-of-war died.
    His time as a Japanese POW inspired him to write his first novel, 'King Rat (1962),' which went on to be a best seller.
    His movie 'To Sir, With Love' was made for $500,000 and took in over $15 million at the box office.
    His novel turned TV mini-series 'Shogun' was seen by over 120 million viewers (2nd only to 'Roots' at the time) and earned him an Emmy.
    A huge fan of Ayn Rand, he sent her a personalized copy of 'Noble House,' writing, 'This is for Ayn Rand—one of the real, true talents on this earth for which many, many thanks.'
    The library and archive of the Royal Artillery Museum in London was renamed the James Clavell library in his honor.
