The Resume

    (April 4, 1876-October 11, 1958)
    Born in Paris, France
    Painter and ceramicist
Member of the Fauve ('Wild Beasts') art movement
Paintings include 'At the Bar' (1900), 'Man Smoking a Pipe' (1900), 'The Potato Pickers' (1905), 'On the Banks of the Seine' (1906) and 'The Circus' (1906)

Why he might be annoying:

Before his paintings became popular, he supported himself by giving violin lessons and by writing soft-core porn novels.
He wore a wooden tie that he would paint different colors depending on his mood.
During World War II, he traveled and lectured in Germany as a guest of the Third Reich; after the liberation of France, he was arrested and interrogated as a suspected collaborator.
He became an increasingly cranky critic of modern art, prone to comments like 'Abstract art gives me a toothache.'
Critic Robert Hughes said that after his Fauvist period, he 'plummeted into coarse self-parody.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was known for his bold use of color.
Largely self-taught, he said 'I try to paint with my heart and my loins, not bothering about style.'
Ironically, his paintings had been included in the Nazis' 'degenerate art' exhibition.
