The Resume

    (1995- )
    Located in Denver, Colorado
Formerly known as the Quebec Nordiques (1979-95)
Play in Ball Arena (formerly the Pepsi Center)
    Three Stanley Cup Championships (1996, 2001, 2022)
    Six retired numbers: Joe Sakic's #19, Peter Forsberg's #21, Milan Hejduk's #23, Patrick Roy's #33, Adam Foote's #52 and Ray Bourque's #77

Why they might be annoying:

They play in a city with a notoriously high altitude, which makes it hard for some players to adjust to.
Their ownership whitewashed their history as the Quebec Nordiques after the sale, going as far as unretiring all the retired numbers to make a fresh start.
They originally wanted to call themselves the Rocky Mountain Extreme after they relocated from Quebec City.
The proposed name drew a negative reception from the fans after being leaked to the media, that a name the team contest yielded Avalanche as the winner.
They had a reputation for being inconsistent, despite having a star-laden roster.
They had a rotating ownership carousel for three years, prior to the team being purchased by Stan Kroenke.
They were forced to abandon their mascot Howler the Yeti, after the handler got into an altercation with a fan.

Why they might not be annoying:

They are the NHL's second (and more successful) venture in Denver.
They set an NHL record by winning nine consecutive division titles in their first nine seasons after the relocation (1996-2003).
They were the first team since the 1937 Washington Redskins to win a championship in their maiden season after a relocation (1996).
They defeated the city's former franchise in a seven game classic, which was remembered for Ray Bourque getting the only Stanley Cup of his career (2001).
They had a great rivalry with the Detroit Red Wings during the late 1990's and early 2000's.
Despite not being a continuation of the old Colorado Rockies, they paid homage to the original franchise with an alternate Rockies uniform in the Avalanche's color scheme.
