Why he might be annoying:

He was unable to compete in the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics because the of the US-led boycott.
His running performance dramatically declined after his 1982 Boston Marathon victory.
He finished in 15th place during men's marathon of the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.
He said he fell into a 'more is better' mindset that led him to reason that if 120 miles per week while training yielded a certain level of success, then 180 miles or more would bring even better results.
Instead, his extreme training cuased his immune system to break down.

Why he might not be annoying:

He emigrated from Cuba with his parents.
As of 2011, he's only one of two runners to win at least three consecutive New York Marathons.
His 13:11.93 for 5,000 m in Stockholm and 27:25.61 for 10,000 m were records for an American runner at the time.
He won the 1978 NCAA national cross country championship in cold, snowy conditions.
