Wrote the novels 'The Time of the Hero' (1963), 'The Green House' (1968), 'Conversation in the Cathedral' (1975), 'Captain Pantoja and the Secret Service' (1978), 'Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter' (1982), 'The War at the End of the World' (1984), 'Who Killed Palomino Molero?' (1987), 'Death in the Andes' (1996), 'The Feast of the Goat' (2002), 'The Way to Paradise' (2003) and 'The Bad Girl' (2007)
Also wrote the critical studies 'The Perpetual Orgy: Flaubert and Madame Bovary' (1975) and 'The Temptation of the Impossible' (about Victor Hugo, 2004) and the memoirs 'A Fish in the Water' (1993)

Why he might be annoying:

His first wife was his uncle's sister-in-law; his second wife was his first cousin.
He was a supporter of Fidel Castro.
He ran unsuccessfully for the presidency of Peru.
He punched fellow Latin American novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez in the face (1976) and the two have not spoken since.

Why he might not be annoying:

He broke with Castro after the regime imprisoned poet Herberto Padilla for 'subversive writing.'
Considering that the man who beat him for the presidency, Alberto Fujimori, was imprisoned for human rights violations, Peruvians may be having second thoughts about rejecting him.
He has written in a variety of genres, including historical novels, comedies, mysteries and political thrillers.
He received the Miguel de Cervantes Prize, considered the most important award in Spanish-language literature (1994).
