Politician

The Resume

    (March 3, 1965- )
    Born in Asmara, Eritrea
Minister of Health of Ethiopia (2005–2012), later Minister of Foreign Affairs (2012–2016)
Director-General of World Health Organization (first African, 2017– )

Why he might be annoying:

For the naming convention used in his birthplace, ‘Tedros’ would be the name to use in the AIA search engine. (Adhanom would apply to his father.)
Despite an insistence on being addressed as such, he is the first WHO head not to be a medical doctor.
During his tenure, his ministry was not above discouraging journalists reporting on cholera cases, in an African country ranking lower than only Nigeria in terms of total population.
Confusion abounds as to his matrimonial status (never married, or married with five children?).

Why he might not be annoying:

He cited the death of his preschool-age younger brother, of a treatable and preventable disease (‘just because he was born in the wrong place’), as a motivator for his global healthcare bid.
As Health Minister, he was key in reducing the HIV infection rate to below 10 percent (and AIDS deaths to below half).
He was a key member of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front — particularly during the overthrow of dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam in 1991.
He became the first African ever to hold the top WHO position.
