Why he might be annoying:

In his correspondence, he constantly complained that America had no art.
Then during a tour of Europe, he boasted of the art America would produce when it became independent.
He left Boston for England during the Revolutionary War because his in-laws were Loyalists.
In his later years, he was dependent on loans from his wealthy son-in-law.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a successful portrait artist in his teens.
He was considered the foremost painter in colonial America.
He was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts (1783).
Despite his in-laws' pro-British leanings, he celebrated George III formally recognizing American independence by painting the Stars and Stripes on a ship in the background of a portrait he was working on.
