Why he might be annoying:

He was let go from MGM due to concerns over his southern drawl (1931).
He spent most of the rest of his career in B-movie Westerns.
During the singing cowboy craze, he had to lip sync his way through musical numbers in a couple of films.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was an All-American halfback at the University of Alabama, was named MVP of the 1926 Rose Bowl and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame (1957).
He was married to his college sweetheart, Connie Foster, for 48 years until his death.
At the end of each movie, he would say to the cast and crew, 'Thanks for letting me make this film with you.'
