Why he might be annoying:

He allegedly worried that Olympic judges would find his style of skating too effeminate and was quoted in the Daily Express as saying 'My big worry was that some fool would say, 'John Curry skates like a gay, and therefore he has no right to hold a gold medal.'' (He denied making the statement.)
He complained about the Ice Capades, 'Skating is not the primary concern of those shows—they are wrapped up in the razzmatazz and glitter.'
He was a follower of est.
He had a reputation for being cold and aloof.
His skating company folded after he got into a dispute with the financial backers.
He had a secret affair with actor Alan Bates.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was known as 'the Nureyev of the ice' for combining ballet influences with skating.
He set an Olympic record, scoring 105.9 points out of a possible 108.
Dick Button called him 'the finest and most intelligent all-around skater I've ever seen.'
He commissioned Twyla Tharp to choreograph routines for his skating company.
Dorothy Hammill said, 'When I first met John, I did think he was cold. But when you get to know him, he's not like that at all.'
He went public with his AIDS diagnosis, saying, 'I think the more open people are, the easier it gets for everybody else because it demystifies it. I don't want others to be frightened like I was, and I want people to understand the importance of safe sex.'
