Why he might be annoying:

He married Gladys Smith while his brother Vester married Gladys’s sister Clettes, giving Elvis an oddly-shaped family tree.
He never paid the doctor who delivered Elvis.
He spent eight months in jail for fraud after selling a pig and changing the ‘$4’ on the check he received to ‘$40.’ (1938)
He told Elvis he should stick to driving a truck because, ‘I never knew a guitar player who was worth a damn.’
He was unable to come up with an answer when reporters asked him to name his favorite Elvis record. (‘There’s so many of them, I can’t remember the names.’)

Why he might not be annoying:

He and some members of his family built the house in Tupelo where Elvis was born.
He said about life before Elvis’ success, ‘Poor we were, I’ll never deny that. But trash we weren’t. We never had any prejudice. We never put anybody down.’
He would try (admittedly, usually without success) to get Elvis to rein in his overspending.
He died in large part from the stress of trying to keep Elvis’ estate solvent.
