Why he might be annoying:

He was an 'indifferent' student until he took his first drama class.
He later admitted that he briefly joined the Communist Party in the 1930s.
'The Guardian' described him as having 'rodent features, bushy eyebrows, [and a] longish nose,' which resulted in him usually be cast as sinister or craven characters.
While blacklisted, he would frequently hear from his students that a studio was looking for a 'Jeff Corey type.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He and his wife Hope were married for 64 years until his death.
He served in the US Navy as a combat photographer, and earned a citation for the footage he captured of a kamikaze attack against his ship.
He was blacklisted after he appeared before the House Un-American Activities Committee and not only refused to name names, he offered an acting critique of earlier witnesses.
While blacklisted, he attended UCLA on the GI Bill and earned a degree in speech therapy.
He became one of Hollywood's most successful acting teachers; his students included Jack Nicholson, Jane Fonda, Peter Fonda, James Dean, Leonard Nimoy, Barbra Streisand, Robin Williams, Carol Burnett, and Anthony Perkins.
He was described as 'an actor's actor, someone that actors loved to watch because he was always doing something interesting in his work.'
