U.S. Congressman

The Resume

    (March 24, 1950- )
    Born in McNary, Arizona
    Middle name is Leila
Represented Arizona's 2nd congressional district in the United States House of Representatives (January 3, 2019 – January 3, 2023) and 1st congressional district (2009-2011, 2013-2017)
Member of the Arizona House of Representatives from the 2nd district (January 10, 2005–July 24, 2007)
    No relation to Jeanne Kirkpatrick

Why she might be annoying:

She served three separate stints in the House of Representatives.
She was unseated in her first term following the Tea Party wave of 2010, largely over her vote for the Affordable Care Act.
She narrowly retook her seat in 2012, only to lose the seat again after announcing she wouldn’t seek reelection in order to run for John McCain’s Senate seat in 2016.
It wasn’t even a remotely close race, with Senator McCain retaining his seat by a comfortable thirteen-point margin.
The margin by which she lost was of even more egg on her face, considering that the incumbent had to fend off a strong primary challenge from Trump-backed Kelli Ward before advancing to the general election.
She then rode the anti-Trump Blue wave of 2018 back into office, while also benefiting from redistricting more favorable to Democrats.
She opted to retire at the end of her term rather than run in the 2022 midterms, perhaps seeing the writing on the wall that the Democrats were about to lose the House (talk about a Congressional yo-yo!).
She said the Supreme Court was 'no longer a legitimate body' in reaction to the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade in 2022.

Why she might not be annoying:

She was raised on an Apache Indian reservation.
She is close friends with fellow Arizonan Gabrielle Giffords.
She was elected as Coconino County's first woman deputy county attorney in 1980.
Her election to Congress was seen as a fresh start as her predecessor Rick Renzi faced a federal indictment on corruption charges, for which he eventually went to prison.
She challenged opponent Paul Gosar to five debates in 2010, and he initially agreed to only one, before backing out of that one as well.
She was formidable enough that when she sought a rematch in 2012, Gosar opted to retire at the end of his term and run in the newly created 4th district rather than face her again.
She would ultimately serve alongside Gosar as he became one of the most disliked and unpopular members of the House, from 2021 onward.
