Actress

The Resume

    (October 29, 1987-April 24, 1960)
    Born in Hawarden, Iowa
Portrayed matron Evelyn Harper in 'Caged’
Nominated for Best Supporting Actress of 1950
Acted in 'Cry of the City (1948),' 'Adam's Rib (1949),' and 'Westward the Women (1952)'
Voice of Elsie the Cow for radio commercials

Why she might be annoying:

She made her movie debut a year before turning forty.
She was typecast as butch, matronly scolds (she was 6' 2 and 230 pounds - towering over most men in her films).
For a scene in Adam’s Rib, her circus strongwoman character demonstrates a backflip during her courtroom testimony scene (a stunt double was clearly used and would have been obvious even to audiences at the time).
Her filmography is surprisingly sparse (she died just as she was beginning to make an impression).

Why she might not be annoying:

She was a veteran Vaudevillian and nightclub singer.
She became an in-demand movie character actress well after turning fifty - earning an Oscar nomination as the sadistic matron in Caged (she terrorized her inmates while munching on chocolates for crying out loud!).
She received an Emmy nomination for her role as Mother on the detective series ‘Peter Gunn.’
She left the show for a starring role on a CBS sitcom. She appeared in every episode of its single season run but died two weeks before the final episode aired.
When the movie blog StinkyLuLu’s Supporting Actress Smackdown had fans vote on who was the rightful Oscar winner for 1950 - Hope edged out both winner Josephine Hull and fan favorite Thelma Ritter by a wide margin.
