    Born in Phil Campbell, Alabama
    Country music producer and songwriter
    Best known for his work with Tammy Wynette and George Jones
    Architect of the lush, string-laden 'countrypolitan' sound
    Won Country Song of the Year Grammys for 'Almost Persuaded' (1966) and 'A Very Special Love Song' (1974)
    Inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame (2010)

Why he might be annoying:

    His countrypolitan sound was derided by country purists.
    He rarely gave interviews, commenting, 'Making records is easy. Talking about it is hard.'
    His only album, 'Classical Country' (1967), consisted of Buck Owens songs performed by a string quartet and harpsichordist.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was married to his wife Charlene for 54 years.
    BMI named him the Country Songwriter of the 20th Century.
    Fellow songwriter Bobby Braddock said, 'Genius is the most overused word in the music business, but with Billy Sherrill you can't use it enough.'
