Baseball Player

The Resume

    (April 26, 1955- )
    Born in Santa Monica, California
Pitcher for the New York Mets (1979-82) and the Houston Astros (1983-91)
Known for his nearly unhittable split-fingered fastball
    Career stats: strikeouts 1,469, ERA 3.54, W-L 124-108
All Star Game appearances in 1986, 1987, 1989
Won the 1986 National League Cy Young Award and the NCLS MVP

Why he might be annoying:

He was only 14-27 with the Mets and 15-17 with the Astros before 1985.
    He lacked charisma.
After his breakthrough year of 1985, he was regularly accused of scuffing the baseball. (But only when he was pitching well.)
He wasn't particularly consistent and had several off years even after 1985.

Why he might not be annoying:

No evidence of any type was ever submitted to show that he was cheating.
In 1986, he became the first player from the losing team to win the NLCS MVP when he pitched the Astro's only two wins vs the Mets.
When he won the Cy Young Award in 198,6 he threw 306 strikeouts, went 18-10, had an ERA of 2.22 and became the first pitcher to clinch a divisional title for his team with a no hitter.
Sports Illustrated magazine made fun of the way he walked, saying he walked like a 'plowman.' Whatever that means.
He was known for his playing and not for getting in trouble off the field.
