He was one of the first professional athletes to admit he took steroids.
He had violent outbursts as a result of steroids, such as throwing a chair at a newspaper reporter.
His nicknames were ‘Rainbow’ and ‘Three Mile Lyle.’
Prior to Super Bowl 18, he said he was going to ‘decapitate’ Joe Theismann.
He once fought Muhammad Ali in an amateur boxing match.
He attempted an acting career, where he was typecast as ‘rough and tough’ characters.
He was married four times, and it was widely reported his second wife tried to hit him with her car.

Near the end of his life, he lectured on the dangers of steroid abuse.
He died of brain cancer.
He was a key player on the Super Bowl 18 champion Los Angeles Raiders.
He was one of the premiere defensive linemen of the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.
He was a two-time NFL Pro-Bowl selection.
He regularly led his team in sacks.
A youth home in Pueblo, Colorado is named in his honor.
