    His tax laws caused the Peasants' Revolt of 1381.
    He lived an extremely lavish lifestyle.
    He kept a mistress, Katherine Swynford, for several years.
    He and Swynford had several children out of wedlock.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was dedicated to upholding the crown and keeping England stable.
    He did not try to usurp the English throne.
    His first wife died of the plague.
    He was patron of Chaucer.
    He ruled England while his nephew, Richard II, was still a child.
    He eventually married Swynford and had his children with her legitimized.
    His descendants included King Henry VII, the first Tudor monarch.
