Why he might be annoying:

    He did not graduate high school.
    He was named ‘a person of interest’ by Venezuelan authorities in the kidnapping of American William Niehous by leftist militants (1979).
    He claimed Hugo Chavez’s spirit visited him in the form of a bird.
    During his presidential election campaign, he called the opposition ‘big faggots.’ (2013)
    For most of his reign he has ruled by decree.
    He continued Chavez’s economic policies, resulting in inflation, shortages and declining standards of living.
    He tries to deflect criticism by blaming the US for Venezuela’s problems.
    State employees were fired if they did not sign a petition protesting the Obama administration ordering sanctions against seven Venezuelan officials accused of human rights violations (2015).
    His regime tortures arrested protesters.
    Two of his second wife’s nephews were convicted of smuggling cocaine into the US (2016) and had reportedly funneled money from drug sales to Maduro’s political campaigns.
    After the opposition won a majority of seats in the National Assembly, he created a new Constituent Assembly to bypass them (2017).
    During a live TV address about the country’s food shortages, he was shown scarfing down an empanada when he thought the cameras were off (November 2, 2017).

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was president of the student union at his high school.
    He is a former bus driver.
    As Foreign Minister, he brokered peace talks in neighboring Colombia between the government and FARC revolutionaries.
    During his foreign minister days, a European diplomat said, ‘He’s the smoothest and least prickly of the top Chavistas to deal with.’
