The team has only made the playoffs twice since 1993.
They play in the most obsolete arena in all of professional sports.
They've been through five different owners from 1997-2003.
Mike Milbury is their General Manager.
They favor young, inexpensive players over experienced veterans.
Many fans didn't like it when they changed their traditional logo to one featuring a fisherman in the mid-1990's.
This prompted chants of 'We Want Fish Sticks' from opposing fans.
The team threatened to move out of Nassau Coliseum if it doesn't get a new arena.
Ranger fans still yell 'Beat your wife Potvin' when they play at Madison Square Garden, even though Potvin stopped playing in 1987.
Philadelphia Flyers scored eight goals and took 60 shots in a single period against them (March 31, 1973).
Their goal tender who won them four Stanley Cups, Billy Smith, was known as the dirtiest goalie in hockey, often swinging his stick at players when their backs were turned.
Islanders (108) and Pittsburgh Penguins (125) combine for 233 penalty minutes in a game (October 14, 1982).
The Ottawa Senators lost their first 38 road games, until they defeat the Islanders in NY (April 10, 1993).
They had four first round draft picks in 1999, not one remained on the team two seasons later.
Mike Milbury was named head coach, twice (who does he think he is, Billy Martin)?
They fired General Manager Neil Smith after 40 days and replaced him with Garth Snow, their backup goaltender. (July 19, 2006).
They are the first major sports team to win 19 straight playoff series (1980-85).
They are the only Professional American Hockey team to have won 4 straight Stanley Cups.
They hold the record for most consecutive playoff series wins (19).
They won a then NHL record 15th straight game (February 20, 1982).
They produced several Hall of Fame players such as Mike Bossy, Denis Potvin, Bryan Trottier and Billy Smith.
Even after several disappointing seasons, their fan base is among the most loyal in professional hockey.
Their fans began the chant '1940' against the N.Y. Rangers who up until 1994 did not win a Stanley Cup since 1940.
Prior to the March 29, 1975, they only beat the Rangers once in three seasons. Their local rivalry against the N.Y. Rangers began in the Islander's third year. Facing the highly favored Rangers in a three game playoff the Rangers won the first game, they won the second game and the third game ended regulation in a tie. At the nine second mark of overtime, Islander J.P. Parise scored a goal and eliminated the Rangers.
In the Quarterfinals, they lost their first three games to the Pittsburgh Penguins, but then became only the second NHL team to win the remaining four (1975).
