    An attack by French Candians and Indians burnt down most of the buildings and killed most of the residents (February 8, 1690).
    It lost many of its manufacturing jobs when the American Locomotive Company went bankrupt and General Electric moved many of its plants to the Sunbelt.
    Its population dropped by a third between 1950 and 2000.
    The Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame left town for Amsterdam, New York (2005).
    In the Marvel universe, it is the birth place of supervillain Doctor Octopus.

    It is home to Union College (founded 1795), the oldest planned college campus in the US.
    It was a stop on the Underground Railroad.
    Its station WRGB began the first regular television broadcasts in the US (1928).
