The Resume

    (circa 1214-circa 1294)
Born in Ilchester, England, United Kingdom
Lecturer at Oxford and the University of Paris
    Franciscan friar
Wrote 'Opus Majus,' 'Opus Minus' and 'Opus Tertium'

Why he might be annoying:

Little is known about the details of his life.
He used his friendship with Pope Clement IV to get around a ban on publishing books without the approval of his superiors in the Franciscan order.
In the 19th century, he was portrayed as a martyr who was imprisoned for supporting scientific ideas.
Later research suggests that he may never have been imprisoned, and if he was, it was probably over a purely theological dispute.
He was an advocate of astrology and alchemy.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was called 'Doctor Mirablis' ('wonderful teacher').
He was one of the earliest European advocates of the scientific method.
He rejected blindly following established authorities in both science and religion.
He anticipated the invention of microscopes, telescopes, steam ships and flying machines.
