Doctor

The Resume

    (July 16, 1925-March 6, 2014)
    Born in Greensboro, North Carolina
Orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine pioneer
    Co-founder of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic (1965)
Team physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1968-2008)
Performed the first ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction (aka Tommy John surgery) on Dodgers pitcher Tommy John (1974)
Pioneered a new, less invasive shoulder reconstruction technique for Orel Hershiser (1990)

Why he might be annoying:

When he played baseball in high school, he mostly was a bench warmer.
He initially estimated the odds of Tommy John returning to the Majors at less than 5% -- and later admitted, 'That was a wild guess. I didn't have any idea what the chances were.'
He was so uncertain of the long-term benefits of Tommy John surgery that he waited two years before performing a second one.

Why he might not be annoying:

He served in the 101st Airborne at Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge, earning the Bronze Star, Glider Badge and Combat Medical Badge.
He was married to Beverly Anderson for 54 years.
The Tommy John surgery he pioneered was so successful that an estimated one-third of Major League pitchers have undergone it.
He developed the Jobe Exercises for pitchers to strengthen the arm and shoulder and prevent injuries.
Although he was officially the Dodgers' team physician, he operated on players from any team, saying 'I consider myself a doctor for individuals, not teams. You don't use medicine as a means of winning.'
He was honored at Cooperstown during Hall of Fame Weekend (July 27, 2013).
