Vocalist

The Resume

    (June 15, 1946-January 25, 2015)
    Born in Athens, Greece
    Born Artemios Ventouris-Roussos
Guitarist and vocalist of Aphrodite’s Child (which also included Vangelis)
Singles include ‘We Shall Dance,’ ‘Goodbye My Love Goodbye,’ ‘Forever and Ever,’ ‘Someday Somewhere,’ ‘Because,’ and ‘That Once in a Lifetime’
    Co-author of ‘A Question of Weight (1982)’

Why he might be annoying:

In his mother’s native land, it would be spelled like ‘Ntemis’ (as ‘B’ would be ‘mp’).
His parents lost their goods in the Suez Crisis (1956), upon which they relocated to Greece.
His weight, as high as 324 lbs (147 kg, in 1980), was a factor in his declining musical output and subsequent bout with depression.
He was a passenger on the flight from Athens to Rome that, hijacked by Hezbollah backers, was diverted to Beirut (1985).
Confusion abounds online as to whether he married three or four times.
In one obit, he was referred to as an ‘unlikely kaftan-wearing sex symbol’ (a reference to a lengthy tunic of Mesopotamian origin); another just referred to him as a king of ‘kitsch.’

Why he might not be annoying:

Born to a classical guitarist and a vocalist, he came by his musical talent honestly.
While he barely registered on the U.S. music charts, he did crack the, ahem, U.S. Disco charts with ‘Midnight Is the Time I Need You’ (1975).
Despite being barely a blip on North American radar, Latin America was taken with him.
Five different albums showed up simultaneously in the British Top Ten (1999).
His children, by different wives, followed in his musical footsteps.
He was a fan of Mozart and Sting.
