Why she might be annoying
She regularly denounces Israel.
Her daughter was a key organizer in the American chapter of the ‘school strike for climate’ (skipping classes for demonstrations against global warming).
She was hospitalized after a concussion in a brawl at a (2014, Cedar-Riverside) precinct caucus — which one City Council member warned her boss to keep her out of.
A Republican state representative successfully called her out for using campaign funds on unrelated expenditures (2018).
Senator Rand Paul proposed buying her a plane ticket to her homeland to ‘learn a little bit about the disaster that is Somalia.’ (Hey, she was born there and fled the Somali civil war!)
Why she might not be annoying
Her father and grandfather would raise her, then age two (and the youngest of seven), upon her mother’s death.
As a teenager in the States, she would serve as her grandfather’s translator at caucus meetings.
She began her professional career as a community nutrition educator.
She is the only member of ‘the Squad’ not to be born in the States.
As a counter-response to the 2019 Trump rally involving chants of ‘send her back,’ she invited Nancy Pelosi to Ghana to honor the 400th anniversary of the American slave trade.
