He sported a thick fu manchu moustache during his playing career.
He was initially drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 1976 MLB Draft, but refused to sign a contract with the team.

His statement was somewhat hypocritical, given the fact he stole bases when his team was up by a considerable margin seven times.

He appeared in six World Series as both a player and coach, earning two rings (1981, 2008).
He was considered one of the most effective base stealers in baseball, prior to Rickey Henderson.
He set a major league record when he stole 38 consecutive bases without getting caught (1975).
He was the oldest player in major league history to record 40+ stolen bases at the age of 40.
He was recommended for the Brewers managerial position by Bud Selig, who was looking to enable teams to hire minority candidates.
He was considered a players coach, who was well-respected by his former players.
He has a recreational center named after him in his hometown of Providence, Rhode Island.
