Why Berkeley, California might be annoying:

There was an unsuccessful attempt to make it the state capital (1908).
Over 600 buildings were destroyed by wildfires sweeping down from the hills (September, 1923).
The Hayward Fault, a major branch of the San Andreas Fault, runs through the middle of the city, including a segment running lengthwise through UC's Memorial Stadium.
It is confusing for out-of-towners to drive through thanks to large numbers of traffic diverters that do not always show up on maps.
Even by Bay Area standards, it is freaking liberal.
While campaigning for governor, Ronald Reagan called it 'a haven for communist sympathizers, protesters and sex deviants.'

Why Berkeley, California might not be annoying:

It was named when one of the city's founding fathers was inspired by philosopher George Berkeley's line 'westward the course of empire takes its way.'
The college at Berkeley is the oldest in the University of California system.
Many Berkeley students were active in the 60s civil rights movement.
It has a mild Mediterranean climate.
It is the safest city of its size in California for cyclists and pedestrians.
Green Day, Rancid and AFI got their start at 924 Gilman, a non-profit music club in the city.
