Military Personnel

The Resume

    (July 30, 1779-December 7, 1793)
    Born in Palaiseau, France
Drummer boy serving in the French Revolution Army
Killed at Jallais, France, by Breton royalists who wanted to steal horses
Subject of paintings by Jacques-Louis David, Jean-Joseph Weerts, and Charles Moreau-Vauthier, and a statue by David d'Angers

Why he might be annoying:

He shares his last name with a gay genre featuring manly men.
His last name is sometimes spelled as Barra.
He was too young to join the army when he was assigned to a unit fighting royalist forces in Vendée.
Maximilien Robespierre used his death as propaganda material by portraying him as someone who was killed for rejecting the Ancien Régime rather than for getting in the way of horse thieves.
Jacques-Louis David's depiction of him as a naked, androgynous child looks like pedophile bait.

Why he might not be annoying:

He died trying to stop a theft.
He was to be interred at the Panthéon in a festival held in his honor but was cancelled by Robespierre's overthrow.
A street in Paris and a ship of the line are named after him.
A statue of him was erected at his birthplace in his honor.
His death is a reminder that children should be kept out of wars.
