He registered as a Democrat in 1996, four years before running for Governor as a Republican.
While advocating for the expansion of the Keystone Pipeline, he falsely claimed it had never leaked. (It had leaked 21,000 gallons of oil in North Dakota in 2010 and 17,000 gallons in South Dakota in 2016).
He has been a frequent advocate for increasing the money available through Farm Service Agency (FSA) loans while serving on the board (and owning 40%) of First Western Bank, an FSA-guaranteed lender.

Why he might not be annoying:

As Governor, he launched initiatives to diversify the state economy, leading to a gain of 40,000 jobs and a 49.5% increase in gross domestic product over his term.
His approval rating peaked at 87%, better than any other American governor (December, 2009).
After the Orlando nightclub shooting, he voted for expanded background checks for gun purchases (2016).
His office in Fargo was vandalized by a man who smashed an office window with an axe (December, 2020).
