Wrote 'Sketches and Stories (1898),' 'The Lower Depths (1902),' 'Mother (1907),' 'The Artamonoy Business (1925)' and 'The Life of Klim Samgin (1936)'
Helped to establish the First Workers' and Peasants' University, the Petrograd Theater, the World Literature Publishing House, and the Soviet Writers' Union

Why he might be annoying:

Due to his turbulent early years he renamed himself gorky. Gorky is the Russian word for 'bitter.'
He attempted suicide by shooting himself in the lung. He survived but his lungs were permanently damaged and he suffered frequent bouts of tuberculosis because of it.
Although he was a Bolshevik, he was often at odds with the party and opposed V.I. Lenin's policies.
He donated most of his income to support the Bolshevik revolutionaries.
He toured the United States with his mistress and was attacked by the press. In response, he wrote the story 'The City of the Yellow Devil' about New York City.
He helped create the literary style of Socialist Realism that was imposed on all Soviet writers. Socialist realism is a fancy literary term for political propaganda.
He was a supporter of Josef Stalin.
He smoked.

Why he might not be annoying:

He grew up in poverty and was forced to earn a living for himself at an early age.
After witnessing a violent pogrom, he became a lifelong opponent of racism.
His first short stories were so well-received that he was compared to Leo Tolstoy and Anton Chekhov.
His books and outspoken political views earned him the reputation as a champion of the poor and oppressed.
He was the first Russian playwright to realistically depict the lives of the poor (probably because he had actual experience).
After his death his hometown of Nizhniy Novgorod was renamed Gorky in his honor.
