The Resume

    (May 24, 1910-December 28, 1983)
    Born in Houston, Texas
Birth name was James Newton Demaret
Winner of a 31 PGA Tour events
    Three-time winner of the Masters (1940; 47; 50)
Placed second in the U.S. Open (1948)
Elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame (1983)

Why he might be annoying:

His last name sounds like 'demerit' (i.e. an infraction).
His career was overshadowed by that of contemporary Ben Hogan.
He had his outfits specially designed to be bright-colored and flamboyant during tournaments.
The outfits became such a trademark that he was nicknamed 'the Wardrobe' by golf fans.
In a golf career spanning twenty years, he never made the finals of a PGA Championship (although he reached the semifinals four times).

Why he might not be annoying:

He was one of the first Tour pros to become involved in golf broadcasting.
He was ranked as the 20th greatest golfer of all time by Golf Digest magazine.
Ben Hogan called him the best player he had ever seen in windy conditions.
He attributed his unique playing style to practicing in the elements of his native Texas.
The over-70s grouping on the Senior PGA Tour was named the Friends of Demaret in his honor.
He had a memorable turn as a guest star on I Love Lucy, as himself - on the receiving end of Lucy and Ethel's backwards style of playing golf ('MAY I...??')
