The Resume

    (April 13, 1918-April 6, 2014)
    Born in Birmingham, Alabama
    Birth name was Bebe Anderson
Best known as Maybelle Merryweather in 'Gone With the Wind'
Also acted in 'All This and Heaven Too,' 'Song of Bernadette,' 'To Each His Own,' 'Lifeboat ,' and 'Wilson'
Played Catherine Harrington on 'Peyton Place' (1964)

Why she might be annoying:

    She was divorced.
Her career waned in the early 50s, limiting her to occasional television appearances.
Her last credited appearance was in a Cheech & Chong movie.
Her name sounded too much like the black Mezzo Soprano's of the same era.
She is also confused with a prominent stage actress, a silent screen star, and the inventor of the windshield wiper (all of the same name).
She was discovered during the publicity stunt that was the nationwide 'search for Scarlet O'Hara' (Maybelle was her consolation prize).
Rumors persist that she was almost chosen for the part of Scarlet O'Hara before George Cukor was fired, but considering that Cukor had filmed scenes with Vivien Leigh before his firing, this is unlikely.

Why she might not be annoying:

She had a bit part in Cukor's 'The Women.'
She variously resembled Ann Blyth, Linda Darnell, and Ava Gardner at different angles.
She performed Shakespeare opposite Jose Ferrer during summer stock at the John Drew Theater.
She lost her only child a mere two months after giving birth to him (and became widowed from the father in 1974).
Most of her role as Maybelle ended up on the cutting room floor (but it launched her career anyway).
She was tasked with raising the Confederate flag on the lawn of Selznick Studios signaling the start of shooting for 'Gone With the Wind' (back when that would have been no big deal).
Legend has it that, during the filming of 'Lifeboat,' she asked Alfred Hitchcock 'which do you think is my best side?' To which he replied 'my dear, you're sitting on it!'
Like most 'Gone With the Wind' survivors, she received an unusual amount of attention from 'Windies,' but surprisingly, she didn't milk it and rarely gave interviews to talk about the experience.
The death of Alicia Rhett, as of 2014, had made her one of only three remaining GWTW cast members left alive; along with Mickey Kuhn and Olivia De Havilland (she didn't have the time to enjoy it, though, as she passed only 4 months later).
