Credited as the last living veteran of the American Civil War

Why he might be annoying:

He was twice married. He added 12 years to his age in 1932 so he would be eligible for a Confederate pension.
It wasn't until that year he began identifying himself as a Civil War veteran.
Census records indicate he was born in 1855, not 1842 as he claimed.
U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs does not recognize him as the last Confederate soldier.
He created controversy in 1953, when a VA clinic questioned the legality of examining a former Confederate.
He told Life Magazine it was his ambition 'to live until everyone else is gone, just to see what happens.'
When asked why the South lost he said, 'We never got beat. We was starved out.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was married to his second wife for 65 years.
He is officially recognized by Congress as the last living survivor of the American Civil War.
He was made an Honorary General.
He was buried with full military honors.
He fooled a lot of people including Ken Burns.
The debate as to whether he was in fact the last Civil War veteran still goes on.
