Monarch

The Resume

    (March 14, 1820-January 9, 1878)
    Born in Torino, Italy
    King of Sardinia (1849-61)
    King of Italy (1861-78)
First ruler of a united Italy since the 6th century

Why he might be annoying:

He was excommunicated by Pope Pius IX after conquering some of the Papal states (1860).
He did not change his title to Victor Emmanuel I of Italy, which in some quarters fueled the perception that Sardinia had conquered Italy rather than unified it.
    He married his first cousin.
He had children with five of his mistresses.

Why he might not be annoying:

He fought on the front lines during the First Italian War of Independence (1848-49).
He allied Sardinia with France and Britain in the Crimean War (1853-56), correctly figuring that in return he would get their support for Italian unification.
He supported liberal reforms in his kingdom.
He sported a damn impressive mustache.
