Why he might be annoying:

In the early 70s, he had a nervous breakdown, partly due to abusing hallucinogenic drugs, and quit acting for over a decade.
He said about the breakdown, 'People think 'Performance' blew my mind.... My mind was blown long before that.'
He joined the Navigators, an evangelical Christian ministry, and raised money for them by selling telephone sanitizers door-to-door.
When he returned to acting, his worries about it conflicting with his Christianity resulted in some 'boring [and] inhibited' performances.
He also turned down several parts he considered immoral, such as Jeremy Irons's breakout role in 'The French Lieutenant's Woman.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He won a BAFTA for Most Promising Newcomer (1963).
His breakdown was also triggered by his father's death from cancer and the breakup of his relationship with Sarah Miles.
He credits his family with keeping him grounded since his return to acting: 'Children take the piss out of you, which is a good thing. I feel totally enriched by them.'
