    He was an alcoholic who drank a crate of Guinness a day.
    He attempted suicide by gassing himself in his London apartment, but was rescued by a cleaning lady (1954).
    He went bankrupt, blaming his financial troubles on ‘extravagant living and most inadequate gambling.’ (1967)
    At the end of his career, he appeared in several of Jesus Franco’s schlocky horror films.

    At Radley boarding school, his roommate was Desmond Llewelyn (Q in the James Bond films).
    He was a member of the Oxford Union Debating Society.
    He served in the Royal Artillery during World War II.
    P.G. Wodehouse praised his portrayal of Jeeves as the best he had ever seen.
    His biographer said, ‘Not one single person I interviewed had a bad thing to say about him. I think that must make him almost unique in show biz.’
