    She scandalized society by wearing men's clothes and smoking cigars.
    Most of her lovers were significantly younger men.
    She was a feminist who hid behind a male pseudonym.
    Charles Baudelaire wrote, 'Her ideas on morals have the same depth of judgment and delicacy of feeling as those of janitresses and kept women.'

    Her mother left her to be raised by her grandmother only to reappear after the grandmother's death to try to claim the estate that had been left to Sand.
