    Wrote the books 'What Makes You So Strong?' (1993), 'Africans Who Shaped Our Faith' (1995), 'Good News! Sermons of Hope for Today's Families' (1995) and 'What Can Happen When We Pray' (2002)
    Officiated at the marriage of Barack and Michelle Obama and baptized their daughters
    Former member of the Obama campaign's African American Religious Leadership Committee

Why he might be annoying:

    He described Louis Farrakhan as 'one of the 20th and 21st century giants of the African American religious experience' and praised his 'integrity and honesty.'
    After the 9/11 attacks, he said, 'The stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards. America's chickens are coming home to roost.'
    He said, 'God damn America. That's in the Bible for killing innocent people.'
    He said, 'The government lied about inventing the HIV virus as a means of genocide against people of color.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was a US Marine and served in the Navy as a cardiopulmonary technician.
    The Anti-Defamation League said it found no evidence of anti-Semitism by Wright.
    One of his sermons inspired Obama's 'The Audacity of Hope.'
    Obama said, 'He has never been my political advisor, he's been my pastor. And the sermons I heard him preach always related to our obligation to love God and one another, to work on behalf of the poor, and to seek justice at every turn.'
