    He quit music at 36 because he was bored.

    He rejected the family law business to pursue his first love, jazz.
    His parents divorced when he was 2.
    His band was one of the first to integrate as early as 1935, with the legendary Lena Horne as a featured vocalist.
    He greatly admired Count Basie and Duke Ellington, composing songs in their honor.
    In 1984, he was inducted into the Big Band Hall of Fame.
