The Resume

    (January 15, 1803-December 19, 1811)
Born in Kirkcaldy, Fife, United Kingdom
Famous for her diaries, letters and poems
Distantly related by marriage to Walter Scott
Died of meningitis following measles at age eight

Why she might be annoying:

Her family called her ‘Pet Marjorie.’
She was spoiled and had frequent tantrums.
    She hated her math lessons.
Stories of her friendship with Walter Scott (who supposedly called her his ‘bonnie, wee croodlin’ doo’) are probably false.
Her Victorian editors, shocked by her use of words such as ‘bitch,’ bowdlerized her diaries.

Why she might not be annoying:

She could read when she was three.
She was quite witty and observant for her age.
Her father was so devastated by her death he never mentioned her name again.
Her poems are occasionally included in anthologies of light verse.
She could have become a first rate writer if she’d lived.
