Born in Millville, Wisconsin
Science fiction writer, winner of three Hugo and one Nebula and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and Damon Knight Grandmaster awards
His most well known works dealt with time travel and alternate worlds
Former teacher and newspaper reporter
Also wrote in the war and western genres and wrote several nonfiction science books
Wrote 25 novels and over 200 short stories, most set in the rural Wisconsin he grew up in
BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison

Why he might be annoying:

His short stories were far better than his novels which often lacked in organization and could be plodding.
During the latter part of his career he started to repeat ideas and plots.
Some of his stories had a dog as a narrator.
Of all his work only a couple of his novels and less than a half a dozen of his short stories have been filmed.

Why he might not be annoying:

His writings eschewed action/violence to concentrate on the humanity of his characters.
He beautifully worked religious themes into his writings.
He once wrote, 'Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine.'
A critic once wrote about him, 'His masterful prose is a blueprint on how to tell a story with wit and style.'
His short story 'Grotto of the Dancing Deer' won a Hugo, a Nebula and a Locus award.
He was the first writer to win a Hugo, a Nebula, and an International Fantasy Award.
