Why he might be annoying:

He voted for the idea of popular sovereignty as an answer to the slavery question thinking it reflected the views of his constituency. It didn't and he lost his seat in the House for his vote.
He lead the movement to enact 'Black Laws' which created segregation and restricted free blacks from entering Indiana.
He was a thorough partisan and loyal to the party line.
He was against giving blacks the right to vote.

Why he might not be annoying:

He only served as Vice President for five months.
He was supportive of Lincoln and the Civil War and did not join the Confederacy movement.
He replaced an Indiana senator in Congress after the senator wrote a letter to Jefferson Davis offering the sale of munitions from Indiana weapons factories and was expelled.
He accepted a rather controversial loss in the 1876 election to prevent another Civil War.
He was riddled with disease towards the end of his political life.
He promoted agrarian reform.
