Why he might be annoying:

In college, he had an affair with his male professor.
After 'Faggots' was released, many gays considered him a traitor.
His writings criticize homophobia, but some gay critics believe his works personify the homophobia he criticizes.
Many gay critics feel he always has something to complain about in the gay community.
In his freshman year at Yale, he attempted suicide with an overdose of aspirin.

Why he might not be annoying:

He started work as a scriptwriter in Hollywood.
He based his novel 'Faggots' off of interviews with gay men he did and believes the reason so many gays hate it is because it's so upsettingly true.
He called for closure of bathhouses at the beginning of the AIDS epidemic.
He founded Gay Men's Health Crisis and ACT UP in response to the Reagan administration's slow response to the AIDS epidemic.
He declared Barbra Streisand a gay-friendly 'hypocrite' (August 5, 2010).
