The Resume

    (March 12, 1926-February 19, 2021)
    Born in Los Angeles, California
    Surfer and sailboat designer
Designed the Meyers Manx dune buggy

Why he might be annoying:

His design was easy to copy, with the result that of the quarter of a million Manx-style dune buggies produced during the 1960s, only 6,000 were built by his company.
A lawsuit against one of the knock-off manufacturers backfired when the judge ruled that his patent on the Manx design was invalid.
His company went out of business in 1971: ‘We just gave up and went away broke with our tails between our legs.’

Why he might not be annoying:

When the aircraft carrier he was serving on was hit by two kamikazes during the Battle of Okinawa, he rescued a badly burned pilot from drowning while swimming to safety.
The Manx was the iconic dune buggy.
He said about the Manx’s look, ‘I wanted a design that would make you smile. I added all the line and form and adventure I could.’
His design gained attention when a Meyers Manx won the inaugural Mexican 1000 off-road race (1967).
For extra coolness, Steve McQueen drove a modified Meyers Manx in ‘The Thomas Crown Affair.’ (1968)
He made a modest return to the dune buggy biz, selling a limited edition Classic Manx (2000).
