The Resume

    (November 2, 1979- )
    Born in Palo Alto, California
Birth name is Jonathan Murray Chu
    Directed 'Crazy Rich Asians'
Other credits include 'Step Up 2: The Streets (2008),' 'Step Up 3D (2010),' 'Jem and the Holograms (2015)' and 'In the Heights (2021)'

Why he might be annoying:

He directed two Justin Bieber live concert films.
He was accused of perpetuating Southeast Asian stereotypes in 'Crazy Rich Asians.'
He was accused of misrepresenting the ethnic demographics of the Washington Heights area in 'In the Heights,' leading to accusations of colorism. It proceeded to bomb at the box office (insult added to injury).
By the same token, his film version of 'Jem and the Holograms' came under fire for 'whitewashing' the show's only black character, bassist Shana Elmsford, by casting a light-skinned half-white actress (Aurora Perrineau) in the part.
He gave his son the middle name Heights (yes, in reference to 'In the Heights').

Why he might not be annoying:

He is the youngest of five children.
He was his school's student body president.
He was discovered by Steven Spielberg.
He has received numerous Independent film awards and recognitions.
He named his daughter after the 1988 fantasy film 'Willow.'
He has addressed the concerns about his films and stereotypes/colorism, and apologized.
'Crazy Rich Asians' is the first film by a major Hollywood studio to feature a majority cast of Asian descent in a modern setting since The Joy Luck Club (it is also it the highest-grossing romantic comedy of the 2010s).
When he was asked why all of his films have dancers, he answered: 'I don't know why. It seems so obvious. But there's something about the dancers that motivate me the most. I don't know if it's just dance, but I do think that the dancers are amazing artists.'
