Born in Stony Creek Mills, Pennsylvania
Outfielder for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers (1946-60)

Why he might be annoying:

He dropped out of school in the eighth grade.
One of his nicknames was 'Skoonj' (from scungili, an Italian clam dish that was a favorite meal of his).
His 1953 season came to an end when he got into a fight with Giants manager Leo Durocher and Monte Irvin, while trying to separate the two, stepped on Furillo's hand, breaking a knuckle (September 8).
If he had gotten one more hit, he would have had a .300 career batting average.

Why he might not be annoying:

He received three battle stars while serving in the Pacific Theater in World War II.
He was known for his strong and accurate throwing arm and led the NL in assists twice (1950-51).
He claimed the Dodgers let him go to avoid paying the higher pension he would have earned as a 15-year veteran; he sued and won $21,000.
He opened a deli in Queens after retiring from baseball.
